The sheriff of Montgomery County in southwest Iowa is on administrative leave after he was arrested for domestic abuse. Anthony Donald Updegrove, 45, was arrested at home on Friday after Red Oak police were called to a disturbance at around 2:30 a.m. Friday. He was charged with assaulting his wife, Tina. He appeared before a judge in Mills County and pleaded not guilty to the simple misdemeanor charge. Court records indicated he would obtain his own attorney. A no-contact order was issued by the court and he was released on his own recognizance. No trial date was immediately set. Prosecutors from the Iowa Attorney General's Office in Des Moines are handling the case. The sheriff's office said Updegrove placed himself on administrative leave until the case is resolved.
