RIO RANCHO, N.M. -- A New Mexico State Police officer was arrested Wednesday. Lt. Wesley Lacuesta was arrested in Rio Rancho after his estranged wife reported being physically abused. Lacuesta's wife told police that she and her husband got into a fight along Highway 528. According to police, she said that they were both in their personal vehicles when he pulled up behind her, got out and walked to her partially opened window. She told police that they started arguing when Lacuesta broke her window. Rio Rancho police told Action 7 News that this was not the first time they had heard from the couple. "There have been other calls but we don't have any arrest history. This will be the first time we've arrested this individual," said John Francis, who is with the Department of Public Safety... Lacuesta was already on unpaid leave for a separate personnel issue.

  1. Restraining Order Issued Against State Police Officer - Man Accused Of Assaulting Wife

A temporary restraining order has been granted to the estranged wife of a State Police officer who was arrested Wednesday in Rio Rancho for allegedly assaulting her. Morgan La Cuesta, 29, of Rio Rancho, filed a petition in state District Court for an order of protection from domestic abuse against her estranged husband, Wesley La Cuesta, on Wednesday afternoon, according to court documents. District Judge John F. Davis granted her a temporary order of protection.

Wesley La Cuesta, 43, of Rio Rancho, was arrested Wednesday morning on suspicion of assault against a household member and criminal damage to property, according to a Rio Rancho police report. He is accused of verbally threatening Morgan La Cuesta and breaking her car window.

A hearing on whether an extended order of protection should be issued is scheduled for Jan. 29.

The petition filed by Morgan La Cuesta claims prior domestic abuse by Wesley La Cuesta. She also claims he has threatened to take their young son out of state.

According to a Rio Rancho police report, Morgan La Cuesta went to the Rio Rancho Department of Public Safety complex about 8:50 a.m. Wednesday. She told police her estranged husband had followed her after she dropped her daughter off at her grandmother's home.

Morgan La Cuesta said she noticed Wesley La Cuesta behind her vehicle on Cherry Road, the report says. He followed her onto eastbound Northern Boulevard. When she stopped in the left turn lane at N.M. 528, Wesley La Cuesta got out of his vehicle and walked up to her window and asked where their son was, according to the report. She told him their son was at day care and Wesley La Cuesta became angry.

He grabbed the driver's window that was partially rolled down and pulled it, causing it to shatter, according to the report. She told police she thought he was going to hit her.

Wesley La Cuesta went back to his truck and drove south on N.M. 528. Police found him near the Village Inn restaurant and took him into custody.

He refused to talk to police and was transported to the Sandoval County Detention Center. He was no longer at the detention center Wednesday evening.

La Cuesta has been with State Police for 15 years and is stationed in Taos.

He was placed on administrative leave without pay earlier this month for a personnel issue.
