Police officer resigns
May 22, 2008
A Winterville police officer resigned earlier this week after he was charged with assault, according to Winterville Police Chief Billy Wilkes. Officer Jon Michael Willis, 29, of N.C. 102 East, Ayden, submitted his resignation to Wilkes on Monday, the same day he was charged with one count each of assault on a female, common law false imprisonment and making harassing telephone calls. Willis was released on a $10,000 unsecured bond. Willis, a former Greene County deputy, had been with the Winterville department about five months and was still a probationary employee, Chief Wilkes said. According to a Greenville Police Department report, a woman was at Tie Breakers bar, 1920 Smythewyck Drive, on Sunday when a man identified as Willis grabbed her and would not let her go. Wilkes identified the woman as Willis' wife.
