The former Highmore police chief accused of murdering his wife had been under investigation for misusing department property at the time of the killing, according to recently unsealed documents in the Hyde County murder case. Ken Huber, 41, is scheduled for trial in September on alternate charges of first-degree murder and manslaughter for the Oct. 28 shooting of his wife Pam, who died six days later at age 46. Huber has said he accidentally shot the woman in the forehead while moving one of his guns. But search warrant affidavits reveal a variety of possible motives and contributing factors for murder:
The Hubers had fought over their inability to pay bills, and the life insurance payout on Pam Huber doubled if she were to die accidentally... Ken Huber had reportedly been abusing prescription drugs... Two weeks before the shooting, Highmore city officials initiated an investigation concerning police property Huber might have taken... The Hubers had discussed divorce, and Ken Huber had been having a romantic affair with Jennifer Lowrie, Hyde County's acting state's attorney. Huber ended a 50-minute phone call with Lowrie about an hour before the shooting, and called her to the house immediately after.... Law enforcement searches turned up e-mails in the Hubers' bedroom regarding a third affair in 2004, and a search of Pam Huber's city finance office produced a stack of e-mails between Ken Huber and several women. In a separate filing last month, Huber's lawyer Mike Butler asked a judge to move the trial to Tripp County so that Huber can get a fair trial, writing: "There exists in the Highmore community a widely held belief that Defendant is guilty (of) murdering Pam Huber"...
