[Excerpts] A former deputy with the Putnam County Sheriff's Office is facing grand theft charges. John Lee May, 39, is accused of stealing a tea-cup chihuahua from a pet shop last Saturday... Acme Pet store owner James Poole told First Coast News that May had been in the store many other times. Poole said May had even given him advice about protecting his store from thieves. Poole said, "I took him for a friend so my guard was down." May had been released from the Putnam County Sheriff's Office last week following an internal investigation into a domestic violence incident involving his ex-girlfriend. Major Keith Riddick, a spokesman for the Putnam County Sheriff's Office, said May left on his own after the investigation. Riddick said the ex-girlfriend did not want to pursue the case... May did not want to talk on camera, but he told First Coast News he did not take the dog. May said, "Why would I take a dog?" [Full article here]
