EX-COP ACCUSED IN SHOOTING WON'T GET PUBLIC DEFENDER

Jack Kasprzak Has Complaints About Jail

September 22, 2009
[Excerpts] A retired Milwaukee police officer accused of shooting up a neighborhood is not qualified to get a public defender, a judge ruled Tuesday. Retired Officer Jack Kasprzak now has two choices -- hire his own attorney or have one appointed. "If it's going to go that route, I would rather pick my own attorney," Kasprzak said in court. Meanwhile, Kasprzak went to court armed with complaints about his stay in jail, beginning with a personal identification number to make jail house calls that he said doesn't work.... "The water in my cell -- there's a problem with it. I don't want to move. I like my cell. I like that area. They don't want to fix it," Kasprzak said... In one [911] call, bullets could be heard flying through windows on the house next door to the estranged wife, while the woman inside was on the phone with dispatch. "Now he’s blowing my windows out," the caller said after screaming. In another call, Kasprzak’s estranged wife told authorities she escaped the house through a back window...
Operator: "You don't know the direction he was traveling?"
Ex-wife: "No, I don't know. No. Oh my God."
Operator: "Janet, just stay where you are, where you are safe, and we have help responding to you."
Ex-wife: "OK."
The woman suffered minor injuries... Prosecutors said Kasprzak's wife got a collect call from for the county jail since her husband has been behind bars... Kasprzak was told not to contact his wife or other alleged victims following his arrest. [Full article here]
