  1. 'Officer of the Year' pleads guilty to criminal threat

VISTA – A former Oceanside police “Officer of the Year” who held a loaded gun to his ex-wife’s head on Valentine’s Day pleaded guilty Thursday to making a criminal threat.

Randy Faye Judd, 50, faces up to three years in prison when he is sentenced May 6 by Vista Judge Robert Kearney.

Deputy District Attorney Keith Watanabe said the victim wants her ex-husband to get probation, rather than prison, so he can receive psychiatric treatment for domestic violence and other issues.

Judd would be ordered to stay away from the victim if probation is granted, Watanabe said.

“The safety of the victim is paramount,” the prosecutor said.

Judd was arrested at a mental health facility Feb. 18, four days after threatening his ex-wife at her home in Valley Center.

Sheriff’s Sgt. Bob Bishop said Judd entered the residence through an unlocked door about 1 a.m.

Judd and his former wife talked peacefully for awhile, but the defendant eventually got angry and held the gun to the victim, Bishop said.

The victim was not injured, authorities said.

According to court records, Judd and his ex-wife were married 14 years and had two children before she filed for divorce in May 2007.

She had alleged domestic violence by Judd twice before and had been granted temporary restraining orders against him, the records showed.

Judd was terminated from the police department in 2007 due to medical problems that prevented him from working and was subsequently granted a disability retirement, said Oceanside City Attorney John Mullen. Defense attorney William Nimmo said Judd had sought care for depression before the February incident.

Judd has sued the city for wrongful termination.

In 2000, Judd was named Oceanside’s “Officer of the Year” and was lauded by then-Chief Mike Poehlman for his “dogged approach to traffic safety.”

Former Cop Apologizes to Wife for Threats
Randy Judd held a gun to his ex-wife's head on Valentine's Day

A former Oceanside police officer who held a gun to his ex-wife's head on Valentine's Day was sentenced Wednesday to three years probation and ordered into alcohol treatment, the North County Times reported.

Standing in jail blues and facing the judge in a Vista courtroom, defendant Randy Judd apologized to his ex-wife after she awoke to find him armed and sitting on her bed.

"She didn't deserve to go through what she had to go through," Judd said, his voice quivering. He also apologized "if I brought any disgrace to the (Oceanside Police) department."

Judd, 50, had faced up to three years in prison for his admission to a felony charge of making criminal threats, but San Diego Superior Court Judge Robert Kearney agreed with probation recommendations from the prosecutor and a probation officer, the paper reported.
