April 29, 2010|By Susannah Bryan, Sun Sentinel
A Davie police officer who failed to show up as a defendant in two separate trials two days in a row is now a fugitive, his lawyer confirmed Wednesday. Tony Livoti, who represents Vally Getejanc, said he has not heard from his client since Monday. Livoti said he left messages for Getejanc and his parents, with whom he lives, but his calls were not returned. On Tuesday, a jury acquitted Getejanc, 26, of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon on his then-fiancee, who was pregnant at the time... Broward Circuit Judge Geoffrey Cohen said he expected the officer in court for the second trial on Wednesday, and when he didn't appear, issued an arrest warrant... Getejanc was arrested on Feb. 27, 2009, after his newlywed wife accused him of holding a gun to her head during an argument on Feb. 3, 2009, before they were married. The two married 19 days later, but have since divorced. In closing arguments Tuesday, prosecutor Jeremy Apisdorf said Getejanc put his police-issued handgun to his fiancee's head on Feb. 3 and threatened to kill her. She did not report the incident that day because "she was trying to work things out," Apisdorf told the jury. "She was thinking about her life and her unborn child. She loved him"... He still could be sentenced to a maximum 15 years in prison if he is found guilty of aggravated battery on the same woman in the second trial. The trial can't start until Getejanc is found... The second aggravated battery charge stemmed from their Feb. 27 argument... [Full article here]
